Homeschool and IGCSE

IGCSE – International General Certificate of Secondary Education

IN RECENT YEARS, more and more homeschoolers have gravitated towards IGCSE O Level exams as the preferred pathway to college and further education in Malaysia and abroad. Here’s an FAQ prepared by a homeschooling mom (Thanks, Rachel!) to clear the fog for Malaysian homeschoolers who are unclear about next steps:

Q: What is IGCSE?
A: IGCSE is the Level 10 high school exams offered by the U.K. Cambridge University and is accepted as equivalent to our local Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certificate exams. The IGCSE is the world’s most popular international qualification for 14-16 year olds. It develops successful students, giving them excellent preparation for their next steps in education, including progression to A Level study, and equips them with skills for immediate employment. Cambridge IGCSE is recognised by universities and employers worldwide. In Malaysia, homeschoolers who sit for the IGCSE exams as private candidates have generally done well.

For more information regarding IGCSE, point your cursor here.

Q: Why aren’t homeschoolers opting for SPM?
A: The Malaysian Ministry of Education allows homeschoolers to sit for the SPM examination (Form 5 examination) in the year they attain 18 years of age. Presently all examination subjects are in Bahasa Malaysia except for Mathematics and the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics). However the Government has announced that the policy of teaching Mathematics and Science in English will cease in 2012 and revert to Bahasa Malaysia in national schools.

Q: What happens after a student completes the IGCSE exams?
A: When a student achieves a minimum 5 credits in the IGCSE (more would be better) he is qualified to apply to any of the following:

  • Study for the A Levels exams, and thereafter apply to enter most private universities locally, or any university in Commonwealth countries (UK, Australia, etc) as well as America
  • Sign up for a pre-university course at most private universities locally, and thereafter, proceed to a degree programme locally or abroad
  • Enrol in an American university to begin a 4-year degree programme

Note: A number of homeschoolers apply to US universities with their IGCSE certificates together with SAT results in English/Maths. If a student does not have admissible SAT test scores, he will be required to sit for SAT during his 1st year in the university.

Q: What range of subjects are offered in the IGCSE exams?
A: Malaysian homeschoolers are known to sit for any of the following:

Business Studies
Chinese – First Language
Chinese (Mandarin) – Foreign Language
English – First Language
English – Literature
Malay – Foreign Language
Mathematics – Additional
Religious Studies
Sciences – Co-ordinated (Double)

Q: Where can I get information regarding syllabus and examination application/services?
A: Visit the University of Cambridge International Examinations site for more details on syllabus and qualifications. For registration forms, time-tables, and services, visit the British Council website.

Q: Where can I get a look at IGCSE past year papers?
A: You can view and download 2002-2009 IGCSE past years papers here at for FREE.

Q: How do I prepare my homeschooling teen for IGCSE exams?
A: A number of homeschoolers in the country have successfully studied for the exams at home as the culmination of their homeschooling journey. In this D-I-Y approach, parents either guide their children themselves or enlist the help of private tutors to complement their studies.

Private IGCSE tutors do provide one-on-one tuition in a student’s home and they usually charge an hourly rate per subject (anything between RM50 and RM70 per hour per subject is normal).  Some private tutors in the Klang Valley you can call are as follows:

Eric 012-3055286
Soo 013-2350286
Kar Yoong 012-9415728
Laura 016-2355205

You can visit for more leads/contacts.

If you prefer to study in a centre, check out the following:

  • Mr Tan Yip Meng runs an IGCSE centre in Puchong. Fees are charged according to the number of subjects a student is sitting for. Call Mr Tan at 012-3453690
  • FLC (Frontier Learning Centre) is an informal fee-based co-op, initiated and led by homeschool parents, a number of whom are qualified teachers. Tuition is carried out at Eaglepoint Covenant Fellowship building, in Puchong. For more details, call 012 2273312
  • ACE EdVenture – a fully equipped facility providing an integrated educational solution for students from Standard 1 to Form 5, including IGCSE.  Fees are charged by semester

Q: Where does a student get IGCSE textbooks?
A: In Klang Valley, I got mine at these places

  • Popular bookshop at IKANO (check out the section on International/IGCSE/A Levels)
  • University Book Store at Section 14, right across the road from JAYA 33 infront of Digital Mall. They are located on the 1st floor, a few shops away from the McDonald outlet at Section 14. Address: No 18, 1st floor, Jalan 14/14 Petaling Jaya (Tel no 79569410)

Hope all the information above is helpful to you. God bless you on your homeschooling journey.

I had homeschool my 8 year old child for 2 years and he is doing very well.

I have a son age 14 studied in one of the church based IGCSE. Recently, he had face a serius issue of suspension with no concrete reasons given. During the suspension, classmete ask him “why he’s being expelled?” seems someone is creating that issue.

Would like to know is there any ways to homeschool IGCSE kids from home? Any resources to help?

Charlie Koh Says:

It is possible to prepare your son for the IGCSE exam from home if your have adequate support. I know of a family who did that for all their children but it is a full-time teaching job. You may need tutors to help you in subjects that are challenging to you.

I have been home educating my children, using IGCSE and A Level books and Internet resources, for the last five years. My eldest has finished her education, and my second eldest is doing A Levels at the moment.
It is possible to home educate your children at IGCSE and A Level, but the more support you can get, the better. Good luck!

I am Aida, I am a Chinese Muslim. I would really appreciate if anyone out there can help me with information and/or resources (teachers, centre, resource centre etc). I wish to put my son (10 years olds) for home school.

My son requires more personal coaching. Currently he is in a private school but he is being left behind most of the time.

I have also approached some home school centre but sadly they told us they can’t help us because we are Muslim, so I am really helpless at this juncture and sincerely reaching out to see if there is any centre near Ampang area which can provide some help to us.

I have a good diploma in teaching children with special learning needs but for serious teaching I need proper system and guidance, I dont know how to start really. I have an Accounting Degree from UK and I have also offered to help in those center so that I can help others and my son too. But I have been rejected every where for the past one year. If anyone of you have any resources in this area, I would be grateful if you could kindly drop me a note at

You can try the British Council in KL or visit their website
The British Council Examinations Services is able to answer most of your queries. The other way is to check out private tuition centres that prep students for O levels. Google and you’ll come up with a list of centres nearest where you live. KL has several.

Hi, do you have any idea where could I get the books for IGCSE- malay subject? Thanks for your help.

Vasanthimalar Says:

3 December 2012 at 12:53 pm.

Hi, my hubby and I wanted to enroll our son (9-years old) into homeschooling in a church-based institution, after a year considering it as we are non-Christians. The institution uses Alpha OMEGA syllabus and the students are to sit for SAT exams.

However when we approached the pastor last week he mentioned that not many private colleges in Malaysia accept SAT, in fact only Taylor’s college does for few courses. Moreover SAT is only accepted in US and Canada.

We were dismayed. We were eagerly looking forward to send our son to homeschooling.

My question is, can my son sit for IGCSE too, if he takes up this Alpha OMEGA syllabus and be accepted into any private colleges or universities in any country? Please help to clarify us. Thank you.

Charlie Koh Says:

3 December 2012 at 11:07 pm.

Dear Vasanthimalar, at Havil School, we offer both the Alpha Omega program and the Cambridge IGCSE. Please feel free to contact us at 03-22763338.

Samantha Says:

4 December 2012 at 4:47 am.

As far as I understand, the Alpha Omega syllabus will not help your son prepare for IGCSEs.

If you want your son to do IGCSEs as a home schooler, he can either do the subjects on his own by downloading the subject syllabuses from one of the examination boards (like CIE or Edexcel), or he can do a distance learning package and have a tutor to help him.

The biggest hurdle you will have to overcome is to find an examination centre in Malaysia that will accept home schooled students (or private candidates) to sit examinations.

If you want to find out more about IGCSEs, please visit for information and resources. Then you will have to find either a private school, a private college or even the British Embassy to see about exams. If you can get a place for your son to sit his exams in May/June, then you can look into IGCSEs more seriously, perhaps when he is a little older.

One last thing. IGCSEs are widely recognised around the world, but if you are looking at another country for your son’s college or university entrance, look at the admissions policies for those places now. You can then work backwards to see if Alpha Omega and IGCSEs will fit the criteria for university entrance (though many universities in the UK and the USA will require A Levels as well).

Best of luck!

4 January 2013 at 12:56 pm.

Yes, Grace. You can register as a private candidate. About tutors, I won’t be able to help. You might have to google for answers. Some homeschoolers use online sites or CDs to learn latin on their own.

hi, if my plan is to get my son into Public Universities in US or Canada, the requirement is basically SAT and complete his 12 years of school. I was hoping that he will not hit around the bushes by attending Local Public school because of the transition in the learning method. Obviously , the public school students will have to rediscover or unlearn everything, language prob etc they have adopted for so many years once they enter private college here.. So , what will be the right path for the children who begin their first journey in u. Is Alpha Omega the right syllabus to get them into US Public Uni? Can he skip O Level and A Level and directly take the route of Alpha Omega > SAT > Degree? thanks

Hi David: Intan Miranti here. Regarding IGCSE Exam Centres, are there alternatives to British Council if the candidate is not studying with a prep centre? Thanks in advance!

7 January 2013 at 2:01 pm.

Hi Intan,

This is what Sook Ching told me: If you’re a private candidate, you have to register with the British Council. If you want to sit as a candidate of a private school or learning centre, you’ll have to register with them as a student, and be subject to their conditions and fees. Hope this helps.

10 January 2013 at 3:14 pm.

wildre: “Is Alpha Omega the right syllabus to get them into US Public Uni? ”

I’m afraid that’s a question that only the unis in US can answer. As a homeschooler (educated entirely at home), my own son did not use AOP, and neither did he have O Levels but submitted a lot of transcripts and extra-curricular achievements on his CV which opened doors. To be sure, ask the learning centers for help. If your child is heading for US, O and A levels are not as relevant as SAT. AOP will help give you child an education, but completing AOP is not what gets you into college. Doing well in SAT is the right step forward. But SAT 1 is not necessarily a ‘curriculum’ test – it’s multiple choice comprising Writing, Math and Critical Reading sections, including an essay writing portion on a given topic to test a child’s critical thinking abilities. So your child needs to be ready for this in the best possible way before sitting for SAT.

hello everyone…I am encouraged by the comments and effort parents and students here are trying to help each other. We run the maths centre in ss15 subang jaya where we teach both the local and international exams.
This includes igcse . alevels and ib diploma etc.

For the first time we have made available our full teaching material for igcse additional maths year 10 and year 11 online. This is done in video and pdf form .This is a complete online teaching course. PLease go to this site to look at the site.
This idea came about precisely because we taught kids in private international schools and we now offer the same material to those of you out there doing igcse. My comments is that the igcse add maths syllabus is pretty good and has overtaken our local syllabus.
At our site we offer also higher maths courses including alevels,IB, etc.. but mainly maths courses.
I hope this will help those of you out there doing igcse add maths.
Mr david tan, please include our elearning site into your list of tutors and resources….
Thank you.

kamlin Says:

25 January 2013 at 3:07 pm.

hello everyone… here are my thoughts about richard’s case…
your daughter should enter year 10 not year 11.the year 10 is similar roughly to form 4 (there are some areas of differences).she needs to go through the work for 2 years ie year 10 and yr 11 before she is ready to sit for her igcse exams.i also advice you to think carefully and choose her subjects well. i find the igcse maths to be higher somewhat than our spm maths.the igcse add maths paper is also somewhat of a higher level than our local spm add maths.the pure sciences phy and chem etc.. well i think our local syllabus( taught in english) is pretty good…
i hope this help you in some way.. to make a more informed decision.

all the best

Hello Grace,
If you wish to take SPM and also take some IGCSE subjects as well, you may want to consider taking the IGCSE English Language and English Literature paper. It will give a great help to you when you enter university in the near future. Blessings to you. CK

Charlie Koh Says:

Responding to Richard… your daughter can take the Cambridge checkpoint tests to assess whether she is ready to prepare for IGCSE next year – test her on on English, Maths and Science. She can concentrate on fewer subjects (min 5) to meet university entry requirements.

This is for Nani.
The IGCSE Biology (and Physics, Chemistry too).
Students sit for 3 papers.
Paper 1 (compulsory)- multiple choice, 40 questions, 45 min.
Paper 2 or 3 (either one)
Paper 2 is a core paper, where the maximum grade is C even if full marks are scored. The content is less and easier. Questions are shorter.
Paper 3 in an extended paper. students have to study both core and extended material (this is indicated in the textbooks). The paper is harder and covers more content. Students can score the maximum A*.

Practical paper. There are a few – coursework, lab exam (paper 5)or alternative to practical(paper 6). Only choose one. Most students choose paper 6 especially because there are not many qualified examiners in Malaysia and it requires good labs & sufficient staff. So you would register for paper 6 (alternative to practical).

Please download the syllabus from CIE which has all the details. A sample paper is included. download the syllabus for the year the child is sitting for the exam as there are some updates from year to year.the CIE student website also has a good guide for each subject.

Registration for May/June is in mid January (maybe earlier in Brit. Council). And for Oct/Nov its in May (usually 6 months earlier)

10 July 2014 at 3:48 pm.

I was planning to send my son to Havil School in Brickfields to do the AOP program. Seems that they obtained the Cambridge International License and are now campaigning their students to go towards that instead of AOP. What I don’t like about this school is that we are paying a ‘International’ school fee whilst there is really no facility to start with. They say it is a ‘green school’ so they can get away with the canteen being outdoors (no aircon) and no proper walkway for students when it rains! There is no school hall and no proper library facilities as well. How can they justify the charges for RM25,450 for the 1st year (3K non refundable registration and 7k deposit) whereas there is no facility to start with! In comparison, SRI NOBLE which is much more established only charges RM15,800 (3K non refundable registration and 5k deposit). At least SRI NOBLE has the facilities, classroom, library, halls, labs, proper cafeterias to back up the charges and it is much CHEAPER!!)

Promises of expansion were set a few months back according to some parents i met but NOTHING has materialised except for the school office so far?? Speaking to the brothers in Lutheran church, they also said that there is NO plans to lease any other building to the school thus far! So whats going on? There must be integrity and the follow up of promises. Don’t just raise up prices for the sake of your own deep pockets and don’t take advantage of parents who are genuinely trying to make ends meet for their children….

motherquery Says:

10 July 2014 at 4:43 pm.

Sorry, Forgot to add another term for SRI NOBLE so the total is actually RM22,900 NOT RM15.8K. Still cheaper then HAVIL school!

richard Says:

I agree with your assessment on Havil School in Brickfields motherquery! I went for the open day and the facilities there are hopeless and they have a nerve to charge us such a high fee for their school. From what I gather, they have zero experience in running the school and the teachers are not qualified as well. Too expensive and run down facilities. Their green concept is a sorry excuse to not provide better facilities to students as well. Better off in other schools. Give this a miss people.

Elaine Says:

23 July 2014 at 1:29 pm.

Yes i agree with your assessment of Havil as well. I know parents from the school who have pulled their kids out halfway thru their semester and many more who will be taking their children out of Havil due to the high fees and inconsistent promises of the owner. It’s really sad. From what I heard, the current AOP students will be placed at smaller rooms in the church behind so that they don’t inter fear with the international license cambridge students! talk about cast out!

Eliz Says:

24 July 2014 at 12:10 am.

Hi..I would like to register my child who is 6 years old in Grace Resource Centre. I am puzzled between Chinese school or homeschooling? Please semd me your comments. Thanks ..Really appreciate it.

HM Says:

27 August 2014 at 11:28 pm.

Homeschool is a tuition centre based education where they adopt international syllabus eg IGSCE, AOP and etc. It is not a school recognised by the government although it is considered private. Private schools are recognised by the government whether it is conducted under the national syllabus or international syllabus eg IGSCE.
Chinese schools consist of private or government national chinese schools. Private Chinese schools are normally funded by the private sectors, individuals, guilds and etc. Government Chinese schools adopt national syllabus and two subjects Maths and Science are conducted in Chinese while Kebangsaan type schools conduct the two subjects in Malay. If you wish your child to learn and speak Chinese well and be disciplined, Chinese school is the option. Only setback is the regimented way of doing things and rigorous learning. IGSCE syllabus will be more robust and help the creativity and command of English for the child. The challenge for IGSCE is getting the right teachers to give your child the proper attention and tuition.

HM Says:

27 August 2014 at 11:35 pm.

The other consideration is the social support unlike in a large school environment and the discipline your child will require under tuition centre based education environment. Please ensure the centre is able to issue your child a school leaving certificate as it is important for the future when they apply to other schools or institutions of higher learning.

HM Says:

27 August 2014 at 11:41 pm.

If you send your child to a Chinese school, you may to consider to enrol him for a English subject under the tuition centre based education. In that way, you can mediate the gap. Private secondary schools like Wesley Methodist School adopts the national syllabus but there are 3 additional subjects conducted under IGSCE ie English, Maths and Science. You may to check out Stella Maris School as well.

29 August 2014 at 10:44 pm.

HM, Thank you for replying to queries about education. But I must offer my correction to your comments.

Homeschool is certainly NOT tuition centre learning. If you or anyone has done even a cursory reading of the posts and articles or resources found on this site, you would know that the very word HOMESCHOOL assumes education that takes place in the home where parents educate their own children. The HOME is our children’s ‘school’ but a centre or a school cannot be our children’s HOME.

Where learning takes place in a centre – whether certain so-called “homeschool” curricula are used – this is simply education in a learning centre. It is surely useful, helpful and beneficial in many ways to children who are presently enrolled in these centres – but it would be dishonest to call it homeschool. It is not homeschool as we know it, no matter how often operators or church organisations describe their learning centres this way.

There are many reasons why parents like myself educate our own children. One reason is of course the poor state of education in the country. But above all, as parents, we believe that education is also chiefly about influence – whether it is influence to develop life long learning, life attitudes, values both moral and spiritual. Therefore, it makes good sense to be our children’s educators because we have the time and place to influence our own children for the better. Whatever the arguments may be (and there are arguments), homeschooling or education at home provides the quality of personal attention and the necessary quantity of time for parents to achieve our holistic goals.

So, if your child decides to homeschool, you are saying NO to learning in a tuition centre or ‘homeschool centre” which doesn’t take place in the home. You are saying NO to schooling where teaching is primarily conducted by someone who is NOT your children’s parents. We love what we are doing, and we advocate this kind of parenting-education because we have seen the benefits and we have no regrets.

Hi my name is Bella and I am currently 16 years old. Turning 17 soon. I have a family issue and would maybe move to Kuala Lumpur next year. I would like to go homeschooling but I worry that I may not be able to catch up. Are we suppose to get tutors for each subject or go to a homeschool centre and learn all subjects there ? I am really confused but very interested in homeschooling. Can anyone tell me how it works ? I’ve been in a public secondary school since 13 and if I go to a homeschool now, will I be able to follow up ?

2 October 2014 at 2:10 pm.

Hi Bella,

Homeschooling is self-education, mostly taking place at home (some parents have outside tuition for specific subjects like music, dance, add math, etc).

First you have to decide: What do you want to do with your education path? At 17, you’re likely preparing for college. Do you intend to go to college? If so, then you must begin by asking what kind of requirements colleges want from you. If you want, you could choose the route of IGCSE O Level. If you are not an academic book-study sort of person, check out courses that match your interests or talents/ambitions.

But either way, you need passion and commitment to go the whole way and complete the course. If you have had no previous discipline of self-study, you might want to enroll in a learning centre that offers IGCSE. Possibly 1-2 years of preparation. Do some research online to find out where those centers are located, what the tuition costs are; find out what minimum/maximum number of subjects to sit for, and to pass; then just get going and and chase after your dream.

Hi All.

Just following the thread and am responding to Judy.

Judy, I was a teacher in Grace Resource Centre, so I am familiar with the AOP, I was sent for ACE Training so I a familiar with ACE and I have actually been teaching IGCSE First Language English for a while now, and just started on Cambridge Math & Science so am familiar with their syllabus and style too now. My eldest daughter is 15 this year and started out at national school and she was the reason we started the whole Homeschool journey (we pulled her out when it got too much for us – if you want to know more I have already written about it on my blog piece about it if you want to know the story ). We used the AOP curriculum because Grace was using it, and I eventually started out my two younger girls on it too. I started teaching at the centre when my youngest was 6, as she was an advanced reader, and by the time I left last year – I had personal exposure to the AOP curriculum from Grade 1-9. The centre also chose me as one of the 2 teachers they sent for ACE Training, as they were preparing to shift to ACE in 2015. So I got a personal look into the ACE system too.

AOP is a VERY RICH curriculum – lots of facts and it’s all narrated to the child. The child must be a VERY strong reader to cope. Otherwise, the parent or teacher has a LOT of explaining to do along with the readings. Not that the child can do it totally on their own. In fact, AOP is actually a good balance of independent learning and gives plenty of opportunity for a parent to be involved. It sparks lots of discussions and research and talks. BUT, it is a VERY INTENSIVE program as the grades advance because it gets very text heavy. It isn’t designed for a child to do it totally on their own. A knowledgeable parent or supervisor (who should probably read the materials along with the child or before the child attempts it) is a MUST. AOP was designed for a HOMESCHOOL environment, ie with one-to-one contact with an adult in mind.

ACE is an actual ‘school-oriented’ curriculum. BUT with individual learning already incorporated into the ‘school system’. The books are more straightforward and less teacher support is required in comparison to the AOP program. However, the material is presented very differently from the AOP set. Some criticism of it is that is very ‘outdated’ in terms of a global outlook and relevance to the way the live in the world today. Some compromise seems to be made in terms of depth for the social studies to enable the greater level of independence.

AOP is Christian but maintains a more liberal view of social studies, and science. Facts are presented without significant bias or opinions. I had students who had done AOP up to Grade 6 (completed Grade 6 Math and Science especially) successfully bridge into the Year 7 IGCSE syllabus without a problem. There will always be adjustment when switching systems, but these kids adjusted really fast. I had kids from Chinese School switch to AOP and by the time they went off to IGCSE, even one year in Grade 6-7 AOP had done them a world of good.

My own eldest daughter is now bridging into the IGCSE syllabus. She completed up to Grade 8 and 9 (Math) in the AOP syllabus. I have personally decided to stick to the AOP up to Grade 6 for my younger girls because I find that the AOP books make them such critical thinkers and they are rich in knowledge about many things, and also because I like the structure. I have seen Cambridge Primary .. and the critical thinking skills and development of character in the Cambridge Primary seems too shallow for me. Kids is the Cambridge primary seem ‘mechanical’ to me compared to the kids I know who do AOP properly (that’s important – whether they do the AOP system PROPERLY).

In short, AOP seems more organic than ACE – and both are for parents who like a structured homeschool approach.
IGCSE is better than AOP for Year 7 onwards – it has recently been revised to become a more robust curriculum in terms of the way language, geography and science is presented BUT the catch is that you have to find the right Cambridge books to use from Year 7-9. THAT is where the real work is needed from the parent. Also there is the issue of whether you are going to use English as a First Language or Second Language books.

I am currently doing IGCSE year 7 to 9 with one of my previous AOP students
whose mom wanted a more homeschool approach to his education. And yes, it IS possible to use the IGCSE curriculum but have a very organic homeschool way of teaching it. We have devotions, we do fun stuff for Geography and we study Malaysian History and do timelines … and I will do this for my two younger girls in future too. We study in my home .. so we CAN do it this way. And once he is ready for IGCSE Year 10, he’ll be going off to a learning centre because they will have access to examination centres and he will need to take more subjects then. But, by stretching his years and my girls’ years in a homeschool environment .. they are gaining the personalised care and attention for just a bit longer. And when they are 16, they will have had a solid grounding to go out and finish off their secondary education in a teaching environment that is similar to college/university. In this way, I feel my kids will gain the benefit of solid early years with caring adults, and then bridge into the outside world before college.

That is my take on the whole process.
We all take different paths to get to Rome Wye valley school job vacancies All the best.

Dear Readers,
Greetings from Bright Gates Learning Center or BGLC in short. Firstly, I wish to thank Mr.David for providing us with plenty of resourceful information. I had personally learned and benefited much from this forum, from the sharing of parents and from Mr.David’s comments.

Dear Catherine, If you have been following the writings and posts on this blog, you would know that homeschooling is education that takes place at home and parents are their children’s first teachers. I am sorry I wouldn’t know if there are ‘pre-homeschools’ for your child. However, I do know there are many learning centers in KL/PJ and elsewhere that call themselves ‘homeschool centers,’ that cater to primary or secondary level schooling. Perhaps if you google or check out Facebook you might find a playschool that could meet your need. Cheers, DT

17 October 2015 at 1:15 pm.

Dear all ….. just to share my experience in homeschooling my daughter ….. she lost interest in her studies after 6 months into form one …… in a kebangsaagn school …… i switched to homeschooling or at least a hybrib version of homeschooling if i would to follow david’s definition of homeschooling.

The rest is history now ….. at 15 my daughter has completed her igcse as a private student and is moving forward at a faster pace ….. she may then graduate early with a degree by 20 or 21.

My efforts to switch her to another public school was met with the standard answer “no more place” ….. this together with other issues of safety, discipline and quality in her existing public school prompted me to switch to homeschooling her. I started by sending her to a homeschool centre …..( again this is not the true concept of homeschooling which david has taken so much effort to explain to us in his website homefrontier ) ….. there she would attend classes daily in the mornings …… it was just like a normal school but it was not to be ……. the centre discontinued the homeschooling system after under one year !

She was left incomplete and lost as a result. It was then i started to teach her on my own for accounting, economics and business studies …… being a qualified accountant with corporate and educational experience in taylors, HELP, tarc etc , i decided i can do it …. it was a new chapter …… i then went further by starting a centre of my own to provide for the needs of my daughter and other young ones ….. mindful of the fact that parents do face problems like mine and in need of support for their child.

I roped in qualified and good teachers from established colleges who are reliable and whom i have an association with in the past. It was most satisfying to see student numbers grow and more importantly i get to teach my daughter …… she got to “”see her daddy in action” !!! It created a better bond and relationship among us ….. all in all it was fun and meaningful experience for both me and her. And what was more satisfying for me is that i got to help other young children as well.

I now have students whom the parents abandoned some homeschooling centres for some reason and some who were abandoned by the centres ! I have students from international schools or private colleges who are now with me for additional support ….. i am grateful for their support and happy to be able to help them succeed.

I look forward to contribute more …… to all i wish you a happy homeschooling journey ahead.

Best regards
Peter Thoo

Dear All, like to share my personal experience that could be a good guide to every parent out there who is thinking about homeschool.

My daughter was going to a homeschool in OUG until recently i moved her to a Private school in Pudu. Here is my observation and experience and could give you some guidance if you are choosing a homeschool.

Date joined homeschool- mid 2014 – Level 4 ( she was in standard 5 from Sri Bintang Selatan School)
Reason to join homeschool – she was a bright student, but dislike going to school bcos, most of the days the teachers does not turn to class..she got bored. Flip flop..between english and bahasa..MOE is in limbo what to choose..

July 2014 – Able Learner HomeSchool – met the principal who promised many wonderful things.
1 – yearly Science Exhibition 2 – personally teaching English to make sure maintain high level of english 3 – trained teachers 4 – weekly outdoor activity..blah..blah…blah..end of the 2nd year, we realise none of the above was done.

Homeschool Environment – Below average. Not exciting, Not creative, looks dull..running the business from some shoplots

Teachers – Not too bad. Mainly from India. I doubt they are qualified. Once in a blue moon, the principal turn up to teach english
Teaching standard – below average. My daughter got bored on the 2nd year. Classes conducted with a mix of kids from different level. No homework given, She was too free and spend most of her time in TV and iPad
Exam standard – far below below Low.

Fees – 2 times revised within 18 months. Additional fees requried for Tuition.

Exams – They give the questions..practice..practise..practise..Off course kids, can answer everything perfectly. Transcom iloilo job vacancies

At first – the management refused to release the answer papers, but after some preasure, they released the papers.

So -2016 before the school starts. My daughter came to me and said, she wants to go back to Government school to continue. Reason being, she feels no interaction, same friends who are younger, not challenging. Some parents even pulled their kids out of the school. My niece was also doing her ‘O’ level, did not give a good review. We felt something was not right

We took her to a Private KBSM school and she took an assessment exam on the same say. Then we really knew her standard.
1 – she wasn’t able to answer simple mathematic questions
2 – She was struggling with her English exam. Which is not right as iGCSE level should be better.
3 – She did really bad in Bahasa. The center had a dedicated teacher for Bahasa.

Off course, as parents we realised the HomeSchool was not performing as expected and expensive too considering the facilities and level of teachers.

Without further discussion, we moved her in to the Private school ( cheaper ) and been 3 weeks now, we really see that she has shown so much improvement.

SO – for the parents out there…HomeSchool is not a real school. You need to make sure your kids get the best out of the schools if you decide to send to one. Make sure you keep an eye on the school and your kids progress, else they are not going to gain the best from iGCSE. Your participation is a MUST. Like myself, i run a business and hardly have time to guide my kids

All the best to you.

My son is home schooled by both of us (parents) and have heard that some centres are not so understanding to home-schoolers (less familiar with exam environment) and with special need condition. Appreciate for your help.

I am a student from one of the international school.
I had my biology paper for igcse yesterday and I am so grateful that I was taught by Dr. Dave. He is very upto date with all the syllabus outcome. During the revision week, he made us do all the questions which abide to the new syllabus outcome. I attended many igcse workshops but I felt that many of these workshops did not cater to the new syllabus outcome. Yesterday, I would say more than half the paper had questions from the new curucullum and thanks to him and the his notes, I managed to answer all the questions. I highly recommend him if you are looking for a biology tutor. Another plus point is that he is a certified cambridge examiner. You can send him an email at

Hi. My daughter is preparing for igcse nxt year Nov. Her home schooling centre did not teach English as the First Language but Second language which it weird. Can anyone explain to me how will it affect my daughter goin in to universities or applying scholarship if her English is not 1st language. Kindly advised.

24 May 2016 at 11:56 am.

Hello Elaine,
I was wondering if you have spoken to the learning centre about your concern?
Actually, language proficiency as 1st or 2nd does not affect applications at all. In 2nd language tests, there is an oral component which is graded differently, and it is compulsory. In fact, some learning centres have found that although a child may have grown up speaking English at home, he or she may not have developed full English competency, universal grammar, etc and therefore sitting for English as a 2nd language is a better option and NOT a disadvantage at all.

Elaine Says:

24 May 2016 at 1:39 pm.

Hi David,
Thanks for your prompt reply, really appreciate it. I have express my view and dissapoinment to the principle of the centre. Still waiting for their reply. My another concern is that: will taking English as second language in the IGCSE examination affect the scholarship application in the future? English as 1st language isnt an advantage in this case?
