Tired of the big city rat race but not ready to settle down in a small town where everyone knows your name? If your answer is yes, then Port Elizabeth may be the perfect place for you.
Port Elizabeth, also known as ‘The Windy City’ or ‘The Friendly City’ booms with cultural heritage and a rich history. With a population of more than one million people it’s safe to say that this is no Johannesburg. With one of the major commercial seaports situated in Port Elizabeth there is a very large industrial sector established in PE which bring with it various recruitment opportunities.
One of the largest factories in PE, and forming the core of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan, is the Volkswagen factory where a large majority, but not limited to, base model VW polo’s are built. In the same industrial complex is the Goodyear plant, these two factories play a big role in trying to lower the level of unemployment in the area by creating jobs and supporting the local communities. The Automotive sector is ever growing and creates new employment annually. Expected salary in PE can vary from an entry level engineering salary to a high ranking manager.
Along with the Automotive sector comes metals and engineering. There is a Zone developed in Port Elizabeth called the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) which will develop as a very strong centre of processing and producing metal products for machining and tool production. The initial stage will be producing metal products for the automotive trade with future exports in mind. Engineers should definitely keep the IDZ in mind for the future contracts that might come available.
We are now in 2015 and our cars are not made of steel any more, they are composed of plastics. The rapidly expanding auto-plastics industry will never stop diversifying. There are numerous areas that not only automotive plastics can expand to but normal everyday use plastics from agriculture, construction and consumer goods to name but a few and this is all happening in the Eastern Cape where companies are growing at an astonishing rate.
PE does not only revolve around the automotive industry but is one of the province’s two centres for pharmaceuticals. There is a long term goal to kick off a program on generic drug production. Furthermore leather and leather goods is a booming sector of high valued goods and clothing and has been an existing industry for many years producing finished leather and car seats. This will expand even more with the IDZ.
With an established and growing textile and clothing industry, PE has been able to produce export quality fabrics from the Eastern Cape, due to recent competition from abroad. With growth in a sector comes recruitment to obtain experience from outside. This is one of the promising areas of growth that should be kept in the sights of prospective job hunters looking to move to ‘The Friendly City’.
There are so many possibilities and opportunities in Port Elizabeth, Electronics and Information Technology are also prime examples. With a developing Auto-Electronics sector the electronics industry has the ability to diversify into so many new areas, the possibilities are endless. Computing and Electronic graduates from higher education will obviously provide the necessary skills that will form the base of new business and will give the industry the access to vital skills.
A coastal town without fishing or any sort of fishing activity might as well be a country town. Port Elizabeth has a healthy fish quota issued to local fisherman and they deliver to large fish factories.
With such a variety of industries and sectors already embedded in the heart and soul of PE, there are some excellent job opportunities in this growing coastal city.
